Time and Place

On our eight acres “yesterday”
that was when my life came to be.
It carries with me yet today.

In summers I went out to play
or roam and see what I could see
on our eight acres “yesterday”.

Sometimes I mowed most of the day;
I did not care, my mind was free.
It carries with me yet today.

In winter time, out and away,
I heard snowflakes land quietly
on our eight acres “yesterday”.

Though time has sent me on my way,
my life was changed eternally.
It carries with me yet today.

Even now, when my mind will stray,
I end up sitting in a tree
on our eight acres “yesterday”.
It carries with me yet today.

Sometimes, when I travel into my memories, it takes me a while to get back. This Villanelle is about the same time of my life as “Once in a Life”.

  1. Thank you Sarah. I’m pleased you liked that last verse; it doesn’t often happen with my own writing, but that last verse brought tears to my eyes.

By the way, I did change the second line in the first verse, from “I remember” to “that was when” because I realized there was an extra syllable in that line. I was vaguely dissatisfied with that line when I wrote it, but I did not understand why until I was thinking about it after logging off for the day.
