Great Sky Exchange

In the early morning
as ebony and ivory skies
mix and mingle,
frogs frantically croak
with all their might
in the backyard pond.

Night’s full moonlight
wraps the sky as a
world’s coverlet
bringing comfort
of unfettered peace.

Birds, alert now, unbundle
and chime welcoming alarms.
High-pitched whistles echo through
early-bird-get-the-worm lawns,
from leafy river-birch-branch perches,
and in backyard’s tall pines.

In fleeting moments, nighttime exits.
Each critter’s song subsides and drifts
as an eastern sky beckons and brightens.
The sun’s golden glow announces
arrival of that which has never been,
a brand new day posed with promise.

Grasses, drenched in dewdrops,
salute joy in being green refreshed.
Flowers lift colorful faces eastward.
My heart quickly begs to join,
to become a poet momentarily
who tags and attempts to share
a smidgen of this awareness,
to share a tiny touch of inspiration
from nature’s wondrous design
to your dwelling place from mine.

  1. Hi Jan

So, so glad you shared this beautiful and engaging exchange. I love how you go through the progression of night into morning, the awakening that comes with the different song of birds and other creatures in God’s natural world. These lines especially I can relate to —

    Birds, alert now, unbundle
    and chime welcoming alarms.
    High-pitched whistles echo through
    early-bird-get-the-worm lawns,
    from leafy river-birch-branch perches,
    and in backyard’s tall pines.

    In fleeting moments, nighttime exits.
Each critter’s song subsides and drifts

I hear diverse bird songs here in the morning in the high desert of Southern Cal. And they are wonderful, reassuring to know there is another day awakening with a chorus of songs to guide it forth.

    Thanks so much for sharing!

    My Best
    Wendy

  2. Jan,

You take me to dawn and to the backyard pond,
the sounds, the emerging light, the fresh breeze.
It is a lovely transition from this desk to that
‘Great Sky Exchange’. (I love that title and all the
steps from there to here.) Thank you!!
