Resting in my hospital bed,
my prognosis is hard to tell;
but I’d be doing good if not
for the people making me well.

  1. I wrote this shortly after I became paralyzed. It is intended with affection for the nurses and doctors who, with the best of intentions, nevertheless regularly disturbed my sleep for pills, treatments, and other necessities.

When I consider that in that first month I literally died twice, and those caregivers rushed to my room and brought me back, I cannot feel anything but deep affection and gratitude for all of them. It turned out that I had fluid under my left lung which was causing the problem; once that was drained, I was all right.
