In the moment

There will always be greater pioneers
than me. Though their course’s my luxury now,
their waves will never swell any deeper
than mine do for me tonight.
………………………………… …….. All these waves
rise from abyss to eternity
like an unrideable Aethops of foam
bursting among spheres of unshining light
and lead my fingers to ungrasp, unfurl
a ripening union with nothing, at all.

  1. Hi Mark,

    All these waves
    rise from abyss to eternity
like an unrideable Aethops of foam
bursting among spheres of unshining light
and lead my fingers to ungrasp, unfurl
a ripening union with nothing, at all.

As always, your poem is written with strong and intense language and skillfully conveys the mood and theme of the subject. I sense the struggle of one’s inner self trying to come to terms with some problem, condition or deep depression. At times, the storm seems to engulf us all an we do relinquish our grasp on hope, sometimes reality or salvation. The above lines echo that feeling for me. What is striking is your use of juxtaposed language. “Ripening” usually connotates the growth of life or something positive, here is is used to express a budding partnership with emptiness, a shallow existence evolving out of the tempest. And also “unfurl”, I sense the hand like a wrapped up flag not rolls out its surrender. Again, I might be wrong about the intent here on the author’s part, but I very much like this poem and find it quite riveting.

    Thanks for sharing,

    Mark,

When I read your poem I feel the void that must exist
before there can be any hope of true unity with anything. It
is as if the emptiness is so complete it is cleansing. In the
unfurling, I feel light as a feather.

It is awesome to be reading your work and to see you at
    The Pub.

    Thank you!
