ABCs and 123s

Classroom Peeks, August, 2018

With only five days with you,
I’m mesmerized with daily observations,
highly-interested in the watching,
as we adapt to new circumstances
in our academic year together.

It’s fascinating to see how trust is made—
bit by bit, step by step, (baby steps sometimes)
as hearts, minds, and souls strive to connect
to a community in the making,
to the community’s greater good.

I look forward to Day Six already
with hope and anticipation
for even stronger connections.
We’re a team within these walls,
a team of artists creating our craft,
say,  a beaded necklace; we share
the adding of the beads, all different,
one by one, day by day, until our
uniquely-designed crafting completes.

It will take us one hundred eighty days
to complete this art activity—
our academic year.

At that time,
amazed at our creation,
we’ll both simultaneously
step closer to view vivid details

and

step

away

with hearts sorting all the memories,
sorting the learnings, lessons from ABCs and 123s.

  1. Jan,

Wishing you many blessings as you lead the children through this year.
It sounds like you are off to a lovely start. I love the idea of adding a bead
a day, a treasure trove of crafting already happening In your classroom.

    Thanks for this uplifting poem!

  2. Dear Jan

Having been a high school teacher, I know the feelings and the sense of crafting you express so adeptly in this poem. I love the perspective and how you describe the process in these lines —

Indeed it is like a string of beads adding something new and wondrous each day and at the end, the completion is one as the year’s accomplishment, the year’s legacy.

    Thank you for sharing this.
    I enjoyed reading it!

    Take care,
    Wendy
