The Mask

windows to the soul
empty
yet commanding
daring one to turn away
without wondering what hides there

behind the music and the laughter
beyond the safety of anonymity
beneath the all seeing eyes
of feathers that do not tell
but only hint

of mystery and merriment
with not a clue as to the truth
whether it’s evil or sweet
or other, or even if anything exists
but emptiness

This poem was inspired by a Charlie O’Shields
water color found here:

  1. Sarah, I loved the mystery of this, the delving into, speculating about the ‘unknown’ so to speak. I think we all wear a mask at one time or another during the course of our lives… to hide pain, disappointment, anger, and then in some cases much darker emotions. I checked out the painting, your words complement it perfectly.

    • Maryse,

Your words have made my day! I’m so happy that you liked the poem, but even more so that you checked out the painting.
That is one of my favorite go to sites. The blog owner is an awesome writer as well as a painter with vision. The guest artists are grandly talented too.

  2. Sarah, exquisite poem, the secrets we try to hide by wearing masks. However the eyes are the ones which will eventually betray the masks. I have looked at the painting that inspired your poem. Your poem compliment the drawing and vice versa. Thank you for sharing.

  3. Hi Sarah

What an intriguing painting, love the colors and mystique the mask conveys and then, there is your poem, equally beautiful and as fascinating as the picture.

    beneath the all seeing eyes
of feathers that do not tell

I love the entire poem but the above lines deeply haunted me. Yes, masks worn either physically or emotionally, only hint at what is behind them. They let us in only so far and then we stop to contemplate what exists behind. What is the status of the human condition looking out from that stance of stiffness and poise, that aloof sense of “faraway”. Sometimes we will never know; and maybe at random, there is certain turn, a subrtle aura of emotion or vulnerability that emanates from within. Wonderful poem to contemplate.

    Thank you for this!
    Loved it,
    Wendy
