With all the wrath

of the Mencken wit

we criticized the critics and

mocked their lives as words.

With all the pride of adolescence

and verbiage of life’s works

fought any renaissance, sought the holocaust,

armed with Plato’s noble myth

and lie of silver and gold.

Self appointed,

enlightened speakers,

prodigal priests of Xanadu,

recognizing the righteous burden

to annihilate approval,

subtly selling subtlety’s memories,

moral subterfuge

helping time chase progress

to any conceptualized end.

Craig, your “sharp truths” as Sarah called them sent me to read pages of Menchen quotes. I have read the poem six times and am now more drawn to “recognizing the burden to annihilate approval.” Thank you.
