Sipped, Not Gulped

The unscheduled greets me
with satisfying silence
for there is
no alarm
no grogginess
no Have To Get Up and Go.
There’s no plan whatsoever
of what I have to do
or where I have to go.

Easing out of bed,
I tiptoe downstairs.
‘Tis time, early morning,
a time to select favorites,
a preferred mug and flavor,
Swiss Chocolate Almond possibly?
a choice book– electronic or paper copy?
a special notebook or journal,
a choice pencil, a comfortable
place to enjoy quiet time’s riches.

While holding this favorite cup to lips,
I watch the flicking of Lilly-cat’s tail.
I observe a sky blending its backdrops,
each moment’s hues ever-changing.
Mesmerized I’m caught in wonder as
night’s darkness steps aside and eases out.

The new day unfolds its pure radiance.
Both hands embrace radiated heat from
my mug on this cooler autumn morning.

I take that first sip
of Swiss Chocolate Almond coffee
as ideas awaken to dance in my head.
I realize a very beautiful thing.

Saturdays are
rescue days,
ones that remind me
of something dear –

this life
is to be sipped,
not gulped.

  1. Jan,

I have had a chaotic day and the last nerve was frazzled and then

    Then
I read your poem. The perfect peace seeped into my being. It was
your words, your coffee, your Saturday…and your Lily-cat that did that.
    Thank you.

Now I am having deja vu…the very best kind. I think I remember a Saturday
some several long years ago when this poem woke me to peace. I remember
Lily Cat and remember (I think) when she counted nine and grew angel wings.
    If I’m wrong please forgive.

No matter if my memory is faulty, this poem is so special it feels like coming
home to a safe haven after a day of fish hook hands.

I thank you for posting it.

I want to hear about your brand new class of smiling faces!

  2. Dear Sarah,
Those hectic/chaotic days often arrive unexpectedly, & they can wear us out when they’re here. I’ve had a few lately myself! (How can life treat us that way? ha) It’s refreshing as energies regroup, & we’re able to muster strength to carry on looking toward more peaceful times. I do believe we, humans, constantly are in sprint-position reaching toward hope. It’s the thing which keeps us going—even in moments weak. We lean on hope. My class? We’ve completed Day 5 together already. I have 20 students–9 boys & 11 girls, all settling into routines within our community of learning. I hope we have a great year. See? I’m bumping into it whole-heartedly—hope. It’s nice that reading a poem can lighten a day’s heavy load & offer a safe haven. Your words are powerful here. “It feels like coming home to a safe haven after a day of fish hook hands.” Ah, that surely sounds like Bon-Mot material. Yes? (Your memory is right about our Lily-cat & her angel wings. How I miss her. Sweet. Days. With. Lilly. Cat.)
    Take care, my writing friend.

  3. Jan, I enjoyed reading this one. You have taken me through the choices that offer a moment of peace in a world that seems to never slow down. Thank you for the gift of a special autumn Saturday morning. I, too, choose my coffee cups from an emotional base.

  4. Ptc,
Good Friday AM. A. Sweet. Day. For “regular-work week” workers this day skips in its own special beat which lightens the spirit. ((F.R.I.D.A.Y.)) Saturday is just one sunrise away, and the next season, autumn, stands by waiting its turn in earth’s quarter-turn seasonal shows. It’s interesting how spaces move in & out of our times. We, humans, seem to chart many dreams with these seasonal backdrops. Personally, I look forward to cool, crisp autumn mornings–porch AMs–especially ones with a warm mug cupped in my hands. That’s some of the best coffee ever.Thank you for reading & replying. I enjoy your stop-bys. Happy Weekend.

  5. Hi Jan

I am there with you, enjoying the Autumn coolness, the coffee and the opening scene of day! How beautifully you capture the special nature of those restful mornings and the pleasure of quiet time. This is beautifully voiced but I think my favorite lines are these —

While holding this favorite cup to lips,
I watch the flicking of Lilly-cat’s tail.
I observe a sky blending its backdrops,
    each moment’s hues ever-changing.
Mesmerized I’m caught in wonder as
night’s darkness steps aside and eases out.

The new day unfolds its pure radiance.
Both hands embrace radiated heat from
my mug on this cooler autumn morning.

    Thank you for sharing this!
    much enjoyed,
    Wendy
