My Homeland

Dedicated to  my Grandmother, Panagiota D. Koukoulis
~
~

Consciously or unconsciously
we carry our homeland with us
in dream or nightmare.

Even though we are displaced,
we need a sense of place…
belonging…
being a part of the whole.

Everything now in this world-
all that we cherish-
are fleeting things.

The only things that last
are God’s love
and what good we can do for each other
in His name.

We can’t go back.
We must go forward…
our homeland in dream or nightmare.

  1. I enjoyed reading your poem this evening.

    “Everything now in this world-
    all that we cherish-
    are fleeting things.”

How true this is, and how quickly we think things will stay just as they are.

  2. A most moving write Pamela and right away the song Guantanamera came to mind… a different perspective, but still a longing for the homeland.
